How accurate are these tide times?

These are tide predictions, worked out from the movement of the moon and sun

So they are calculated years in advance rather than measured on the day. Barmouth has its own Environment Agency tide gauge, and every month we compare our predictions against it directly. The match stays over 98%. Times match to within about 10 minutes and heights to within about 15 cm.

    Not for navigation

These times are a guide for planning a day out, a coastal walk or a photo. They are not for navigation or anything where an exact tide height matters, and weather can push the real sea level above or below any prediction. For navigation, use official Admiralty sources.

    About Barmouth tides

Barmouth sits at the mouth of the Mawddach estuary on Cardigan Bay. The tidal range here is smaller than the North Wales coast — around 4–5 metres on spring tides — but the estuary drains almost completely at low water, exposing a huge expanse of sand. The estuary bar means many boat movements are tied tightly to the tide.

    Barmouth tides — FAQ

What is the tidal range at Barmouth?

About 4–5 metres on spring tides and 2 metres or so on neap tides. The exact height for each tide is shown next to the time above.

How many tides does Barmouth get each day?

Two high tides and two low tides in roughly 24 hours 50 minutes, so each tide is about 6 hours 12 minutes apart and the times drift forward each day.

Are Barmouth tide times in GMT or BST?

Yes — all times on this page are UK local time (GMT in winter, BST in summer).

Can I cross the Mawddach estuary at low tide?

No. The estuary has deep channels that don't dry out, and the tide comes back in fast. Use the Barmouth footbridge alongside the railway instead.
